For Away Fans: Istanbul is a passionate football city with fierce rivalries. Away fans should expect an intense atmosphere, particularly with Fenerbahçe’s fanbase. While the city is generally safe, it’s important to be mindful of team colours and avoid wearing them in certain areas, particularly near rival fan bases.

Local Currency: The Turkish Lira (₺).

Recently, the Turkish lira has experienced significant fluctuations, leading to favourable exchange rates for many international visitors. It's wise to monitor exchange rates closely.

Cash vs. Card: While cards are widely accepted in restaurants and shops, it's recommended to carry some cash for smaller vendors, local markets, and transportation. Currency exchange offices are common in tourist areas, and ATMs are widely available.

Closest Airport

Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (SAW): Located on the Asian side of Istanbul, around 30 km from Fenerbahçe’s stadium, and about 40-45 km from the city center. This airport is closer to the stadium.

Transportation: Havaist and IETT buses connect the airport to Kadıköy (near the stadium) or you can take a taxi (~€25-35) for a 30-45 minute drive.

Istanbul Airport (IST): The main international hub on the European side, about 50 km from the city centre.

Transportation: Metro lines, Havaist buses, or taxis (~€40) can get you to the Asian side of Istanbul in about an hour or more, depending on traffic.

Local Cuisine and Alcohol

Istanbul's cuisine is a flavorful blend of Ottoman, Turkish, and Mediterranean influences. Popular dishes include Döner kebab (seasoned meat cooked on a vertical rotisserie), Lahmacun (a thin flatbread with minced meat and spices), and Meze (small plates like hummus and ezme). Kadıköy is one of the liveliest areas on Istanbul’s Asian side, known for its alternative vibe. It’s full of bustling bars, rooftop spots, and pubs, making it the go-to spot for a diverse and eclectic night out.

Name: Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium

Location: Located in the Kadıköy district on the Asian side of Istanbul.

Capacity: 50,530 seats.

Tips for Away Fans: Away supporters are usually placed in a designated section with strict security checks. Expect a charged atmosphere.

Public Transport Options

Metro: The M4 (Kadıköy-Tavşantepe) metro line connects Kadıköy with other parts of the Asian side. To reach the stadium, use the Kadıköy stop and walk approximately 20 minutes.

Ferries: Istanbul’s ferry system is a scenic way to travel between the European and Asian sides. Ferries from Eminönü or Karaköy on the European side go to Kadıköy regularly.

Buses: Various IETT buses serve Kadıköy, but match day traffic can make them slower.

Marmaray Line: This intercontinental railway runs under the Bosphorus and connects the European and Asian sides. Stops in Üsküdar and Ayrılık Çeşmesi, both close to Kadıköy.

Transport Pass: The Istanbulkart is a must for easy travel on buses, metro, ferries, and trams. It can be topped up at stations.

Safety & Security Information

For Away Fans: Istanbul is generally safe, but during matchdays, it’s important to stay cautious in areas where tensions may rise between rival fans. Avoid displaying team colours openly when in public outside of designated areas.

Stadium Security: Expect rigorous security checks. Arrive early to pass through gates and keep to designated areas for away fans to avoid any issues with home supporters.

Tips For Avoiding Taxi Scams

Taking a taxi in Istanbul is generally affordable and convenient, but with thousands of taxis, not every driver is honest. Here are some common scams and how to avoid them:

Extended Routes: Drivers may take a longer route to inflate the fare. Use GPS on your phone to track the route or check estimated fares for popular destinations in advance.

Note-Switching Trick: Some drivers may switch larger notes with smaller ones to confuse you. Always confirm the value of the note before handing it over and give exact change when possible.

No Change: Drivers may claim they don't have enough change. If you're short, insist they find change or visit a nearby shop.

Fixed Fare: Some drivers suggest a fixed price instead of using the meter, often leading to overcharging. Always insist on using the meter.

Unlicensed Taxis: Only take official yellow taxis with a meter and license information displayed. Avoid private or unlicensed drivers offering rides.

Night vs. Day Rates: Nighttime pricing has been abolished, so make sure the meter is set to daytime rates ("gündüz").
