City Overview
Porto is Portugal's second-largest city, with a population of around 230,000. It's known for its historical significance, especially the Ribeira District, and its rich cultural heritage, including being the origin of Port wine. The city has a relaxed vibe, but matchdays can be lively, especially near the stadium. Porto FC fans are passionate but generally friendly toward away supporters.
For Away Fans: Away fans can expect a lively but welcoming atmosphere.
Currency Info
The currency is the Euro (€).
Cash vs. Card: It’s recommended to carry some cash for small purchases, though most places, including public transport and restaurants, accept card payments. ATMs are widely available.
Getting Around Porto
Porto may be a small city, but its steep hills can make walking a bit challenging. However, some of the city's best treasures are hidden in its narrow cobbled streets and winding stairways, perfect for exploring on foot. Both Bolt and Uber are available for rides around Porto, with Bolt often being the more affordable option.
Closest Airport
Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO): This is the nearest airport, located about 15 km (9 miles) from the city centre.
Transportation Options:
Metro: The Violet Line (Line E) takes about 25-30 minutes to reach the city center.
Taxi/Rideshare: Around 20-25 minutes, costing approximately €20-€30.
Buses: The 601 and 602 bus lines also connect the airport to central Porto.
Stadium Name & Location
Name: Estádio do Dragão
Location: Via Futebol Clube do Porto, 4350-415 Porto.
Capacity: 50,033 seats. The stadium is located in the eastern part of the city.
Tips for Away Fans: Away fans are usually seated in the corner sections, with designated entrances and security checks. Be sure to arrive early to navigate the crowds and security smoothly.
Public Transport Options
Metro: The Blue Line (Line A) serves the Estádio do Dragão station, making it a convenient way to get to the stadium from the city center.
Bus: Several bus routes, including 400, 401, and 305, have stops near the stadium.
Trams: Although Porto’s historic trams are more of a tourist attraction, they are not ideal for stadium travel.
Public Transport Pass: The Andante Card is a rechargeable travel card valid for buses, metro, and suburban trains. You can buy a single or daily pass at any station.
Recommended Area for Hotels
Ribeira District: Highly rated online, it’s central and filled with restaurants, bars, and scenic views of the Douro River.
Boavista: Close to the city center, it's a quieter and slightly more upscale area with good access to public transport.
Baixa (Downtown): Great for those wanting to be in the heart of the city’s nightlife and shopping, plus easy access to transport links.
Best Neighbourhoods for Spending Time
Ribeira: A UNESCO World Heritage site with stunning river views, restaurants, and Port wine cellars.
Cedofeita: Trendy, artsy neighborhood with boutiques, galleries, and indie cafes.
For nightlife, the bars along Rua da Galeria de Paris and surrounding roads are the top spots to visit.
Areas to Avoid: Some areas around the Campanhã district and just outside the stadium can feel less safe at night, especially for away fans wearing team colours. Stick to central areas and travel in groups.
Sights & Landmarks
Livraria Lello: One of the world’s most beautiful bookstores, said to have inspired parts of Harry Potter.
Dom Luís I Bridge: Iconic double-deck metal arch bridge with stunning views over the Douro River.
Clérigos Tower: A historic bell tower offering panoramic views of Porto.
São Bento Railway Station: Famous for its intricate tilework depicting Portugal’s history.
Best Areas & Pubs for Fans
Most fans typically gather in Ribeira Square on the Douro River, and the surrounding bars. Here are some other options:
Terrace Lounge 360º - Panaromic rooftop bar with views across the Douro River and Dom Luís I Bridge.
Bar Rooftop Flores: Small 'hidden' oasis with rooftop views over Porto.
Late Clubs Bars: Galerias de Paris Street - lined with bars and clubs. Locals often drink outside and move between venues, making the street busy, especially on weekends. To experience it fully, arrive around 11:30 PM, as the party starts late, and bars are quiet earlier.
Café Piolho D’Ouro: A favourite among locals and football fans, this historic café is close to the city centre and offers outdoor seating in the square.
Adega Sports Bar: A popular spot for watching live sports with a welcoming vibe for both home and away fans. A good option if the weather isn't great.
Food Options:
Café Santiago : Ranked among the 50 best sandwiches globally, the Francesinha Santiago® has become one of Portugal’s most iconic culinary dishes.
Taberna dos Mercadores : Back alley restaurant close to Douro River, known for its high quality seafood dishes. Booking recommended.
Gazela: Iconic, no-frills snack bar famous for its unique hot dogs and traditional Portuguese sandwiches. If it's good enough for Anthony Bourdain...
Curb Burger: Easily one of the best burgers we've had. Though it's a bit off the beaten path, you can have it delivered to your bar through the Bolt Food Delivery App. Enjoying a Curb Burger whilst sat on the curb? Works for us!
Muu Steakhouse: Known for its high quality meat dishes and wine, also offering seafood and vegan options.
Safety & Security Information
For Away Fans: Porto is generally safe, but as in any city, it’s best to avoid isolated areas, especially around the Campanhã station late at night.
Stadium Security: Be prepared for thorough checks entering the stadium, with a separate entrance for away fans.
