1-Day Itinerary
Morning
Nyhavn
Start your day at Nyhavn, Copenhagen’s famous 17th-century waterfront. The colorful buildings lining the canal and the historic wooden ships create a postcard-perfect scene. It’s a great spot for a morning coffee at one of the cozy cafes.
Tip: Early in the morning, it’s less crowded, making it the perfect time for photos.
Amalienborg Palace
Walk or take a quick ride to Amalienborg, the royal family’s winter residence. Witness the Changing of the Guard at 12:00 PM if time permits. The architecture here is stunning, and the square provides a great view of the surrounding buildings.
Rosenborg Castle and the King's Garden
A short walk from Amalienborg will take you to Rosenborg Castle. This Renaissance castle houses the Danish crown jewels and royal regalia. Even if you skip going inside, the King’s Garden surrounding the castle is beautiful for a stroll.
Round Tower (Rundetaarn)
Head to the Round Tower, a unique 17th-century tower with a spiraling ramp instead of stairs. It offers a great view over the city from the top.
Afternoon
Lunch
Copenhagen’s city center is filled with great restaurants. You can try traditional Danish smørrebrød (open-faced sandwiches) at places like Aamanns or a more modern, trendy spot like Torvehallerne Market, which has various food stalls and fresh produce. Torvehallerne is great if you want multiple options and a bustling market atmosphere.
Christiansborg Palace
After lunch, visit Christiansborg Palace, which houses the Danish Parliament. You can explore the Royal Reception Rooms, the ruins beneath the palace, and climb the tower for panoramic views.
Tip: The Tower of Christiansborg offers free entry and one of the best views in the city.
Canal Tour from Nyhavn or Gammel Strand
Take a scenic boat tour of Copenhagen’s canals. It’s a relaxing way to see the city from the water and spot famous landmarks like the Opera House, the futuristic Black Diamond Library, and Christianshavn.
Optional Trip to Malmö, Sweden by Train
For an easy cross-border adventure, take a train from Copenhagen to Malmö, Sweden. The journey is quick, taking just 35–40 minutes via the Øresund Bridge, a stunning feat of engineering that connects the two cities over the water. Once in Malmö, head to Lilla Torg, a charming old square lined with historic buildings, cafes, and restaurants. It's the perfect place to relax, enjoy Swedish cuisine, or explore nearby attractions like Malmö Castle or the Turning Torso, Scandinavia's tallest skyscraper.
Evening
Tivoli Gardens
Finish your day at Tivoli Gardens, one of the world’s oldest amusement parks and a magical place to experience after dark. Stroll through the beautiful gardens, take a ride on the historic roller coasters, or enjoy a meal at one of Tivoli’s restaurants.
Copenhagen Street Food
If you want something more relaxed for the evening, head to Reffen, Copenhagen's street food market by the waterfront. It has a fantastic selection of global food trucks, drinks, and a lively atmosphere with a view of the harbor.
