Bruges, often referred to as the "Venice of the North," is a charming medieval city in the northwest of Belgium. Known for its picturesque canals, cobblestone streets, and well-preserved Gothic architecture, Bruges feels like stepping back in time. The entire city center is a UNESCO World Heritage site, making it a magnet for history lovers, architecture enthusiasts, and romantics alike. In addition to its rich history, Bruges is famous for its Belgian chocolate shops, artisanal beer, and vibrant food culture. With its cosy atmosphere and cultural treasures, Bruges is a perfect destination for a day trip or a weekend getaway.

1-Day Itinerary

Morning

Market Square (Markt) & Belfry Tower

Start your day at the heart of Bruges, the Market Square (Markt). This bustling square is surrounded by colorful buildings, cafes, and horse-drawn carriages. The star attraction here is the Belfry of Bruges, a medieval bell tower offering panoramic views of the city. Climb its 366 steps to enjoy breathtaking sights of Bruges and the surrounding countryside. The climb takes some effort, but the view at the top is worth it.

Burg Square & Basilica of the Holy Blood

A short walk from the Market Square leads you to Burg Square, another beautiful plaza with historical buildings like the City Hall (Stadhuis) and the Basilica of the Holy Blood. This basilica houses a revered relic—allegedly containing drops of Christ’s blood—which is displayed during services. The mix of Romanesque and Gothic architecture here is stunning, and the peaceful atmosphere makes it worth a visit.

Canal Boat Tour

Bruges is crisscrossed with canals, and one of the best ways to see the city is from the water. Head to one of the boat docks (several are near the center), and take a 30-minute canal boat tour. The boat tour offers a different perspective of Bruges, passing under medieval bridges and alongside beautiful Flemish homes. Guides share fascinating tidbits about the city’s history as you float along.

Lunch

Local Delights For lunch, indulge in some Belgian specialties at one of the local cafes or brasseries. You can try classics like moules-frites (mussels and fries) or croquettes, often made with shrimp or cheese. Pair your meal with a Belgian beer from a local brewery.

Afternoon

The Church of Our Lady (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk)

After lunch, head to the Church of Our Lady, one of Bruges' most famous landmarks. This Gothic church houses a beautiful marble sculpture of Madonna and Child by Michelangelo, one of his few works located outside Italy. The church itself is a marvel of Gothic architecture, with its soaring spire and tranquil interior.

Groeningemuseum

Art lovers will appreciate the Groeningemuseum, which features an impressive collection of Flemish and Belgian art. The museum showcases works by famous painters such as Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling. The focus here is on medieval and Renaissance art, making it a must-visit for those interested in the artistic heritage of the region.

Rozenhoedkaai

No visit to Bruges is complete without a stroll down the Rozenhoedkaai—arguably the most photographed spot in Bruges. This picturesque quay offers stunning views of the canals, lined with trees and medieval houses. It’s a perfect place for some leisurely walking and snapping photos, especially as the light softens in the late afternoon.

Evening

Dinner at Den Gouden Harynck

For dinner, treat yourself to a gourmet experience at Den Gouden Harynck, a Michelin-starred restaurant highly rated across all platforms (4.5 stars on TripAdvisor, over 4.6 on Google). Nestled in a beautiful historic building, this restaurant offers a refined dining experience with a modern twist on traditional Flemish cuisine. Chef Philippe Serruys is known for creating elegant dishes with fresh, local ingredients, and the wine list is equally impressive. Be sure to try their tasting menu if you want to experience a range of flavors.

Tip: Reservations are highly recommended, as the restaurant is popular with both locals and tourists.

Night Walk & Belgian Chocolate

End your day with a quiet night walk along the canals. The streets of Bruges are beautifully lit at night, creating a magical atmosphere. Make a final stop at a chocolate shop for some artisanal Belgian chocolates to take home. Many shops stay open late, allowing you to browse and pick up some sweet treats as a perfect souvenir.
