Bergen, often referred to as the "Gateway to the Fjords," is Norway’s second-largest city and a UNESCO World Heritage site. With its colorful wooden houses, surrounding mountains, and scenic waterfront, Bergen offers an enchanting blend of natural beauty and rich history. The city has long been a hub for maritime trade, and it retains a strong connection to its Viking and Hanseatic heritage. Famous for its rainy weather, bustling fish market, and stunning landscapes, Bergen is the perfect starting point for exploring Norway’s dramatic fjords.

1-Day Itinerary

Morning

Bryggen

Start your day in Bryggen, the city’s famous waterfront district. These colorful wooden buildings date back to the Hanseatic period and are a UNESCO World Heritage site. Explore the narrow alleyways and quaint shops selling local crafts.

Fish Market

Just a short walk from Bryggen is the lively Fish Market (Fisketorget), which has been a staple of Bergen for centuries. Sample fresh seafood such as shrimp, crab, or Norway’s famous salmon, or grab a quick snack.

Afternoon

Fløibanen Funicular to Mount Fløyen

After immersing yourself in Bergen’s history, head to Fløibanen, the funicular railway that takes you up to Mount Fløyen. At the top, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views over the city, fjords, and mountains. You can also take a short walk around the scenic trails, spotting lakes and viewpoints along the way.

Lunch

Enjoy lunch at the café on Mount Fløyen or take the funicular back down and eat at a local restaurant in the city centre. If you choose to eat in the city centre, Pingvinen is a great casual spot offering traditional Norwegian dishes like fish soup or reindeer stew.

Fjord Cruise

If you still have time and energy, you can take a short fjord cruise departing from the harbour. Evening cruises offer a peaceful and scenic experience with dramatic views of the fjords and surrounding mountains.

Evening

Bergenhus Fortress and Walk along Vågen

Take a scenic walk along Vågen, Bergen’s central harbor, towards the Bergenhus Fortress. This is one of the oldest fortresses in Norway, and it’s free to explore. The views of the harbour and mountains at dusk are stunning.

Dinner at Bryggen or in the City Center

For dinner, return to Bryggen or head to one of the many excellent restaurants in the city. Enhjørningen is a historic restaurant in Bryggen that specialises in seafood, perfect for a memorable meal by the waterfront. Alternatively, try Bare Vestland for modern Norwegian tapas.
