City Overview
Bergamo, located in the Lombardy region of northern Italy, is a city rich in history and charm. Divided into two main areas—Città Alta (Upper City) and Città Bassa (Lower City)—it offers a blend of medieval architecture and modern conveniences. Città Alta is perched on a hilltop and surrounded by Venetian walls (a UNESCO World Heritage site), offering panoramic views, cobbled streets, and historical landmarks. Città Bassa is more contemporary, housing shops, restaurants, and vibrant nightlife. Bergamo is known for its artistic heritage, culture, and as the home of Atalanta B.C., one of Italy's most beloved football clubs.
Local Cuisine and Alcohol
Bergamo's cuisine is hearty and reflects its northern Italian roots, featuring plenty of polenta (cornmeal) and dishes rich in butter and cheese. Popular local dishes include Casoncelli alla Bergamasca (stuffed pasta with bacon, butter, and sage) and Polenta e Osei (a dessert made with sponge cake and chocolate). Cheese lovers will enjoy the locally produced Taleggio and Strachitunt cheeses.
For alcohol, Lombardy produces fine wines, especially Valcalepio, which comes from the nearby hills. Bergamo also offers a great selection of Italian craft beers, including those from the Birrificio Elav brewery.
Currency Info
Italy uses the Euro (€). Most places in Bergamo accept credit and debit cards, but having some cash on hand is advisable, especially for small purchases and transportation tickets.

Getting Around
Bergamo is easy to navigate, thanks to an efficient public transportation system. The ATB bus network connects both the Upper and Lower parts of the city, and there is a funicular connecting Città Alta and Città Bassa. Walking is also a great way to explore Bergamo, particularly in Città Alta. Taxis are available, but they can be pricey compared to public transportation.
Closest Airport
Orio al Serio International Airport (BGY), also known as Milan Bergamo Airport, is the closest airport to the city, located just 5 kilometers from the city center. It is a major hub for low-cost carriers like Ryanair.
Transportation from the Airport
Bus: The ATB Bus Line 1 connects the airport with both Città Bassa and Città Alta, taking around 20-30 minutes.
Taxi: A taxi from the airport to central Bergamo takes about 10-15 minutes and costs approximately €20-30.
Airport Shuttle: There are shuttle services available, though public buses are generally more economical.
Stadium Name & Location
Gewiss Stadium (formerly Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia) is located in the Borgo Santa Caterina district of Bergamo. The stadium has been renovated recently to improve fan experience and increase capacity.
Address: Viale Giulio Cesare, 18, 24124 Bergamo BG, Italy.
Transport Options to the Stadium
Bus: Several ATB buses (Lines 6, 9, and 11) connect the city center with the stadium. They stop near the Borgo Santa Caterina area.
Walking: If staying in Città Bassa, walking to the stadium is possible and takes around 20-30 minutes.
Taxi: A quick and comfortable option, though it may be challenging to find one post-match.
Recommended Area for Hotels and Visiting
Città Bassa has a close proximity to the train station, shops, restaurants, and transportation. However we recommend the historical old town setting of Città Alta . Staying in Città Alta offers beautiful views and charming medieval surroundings. You can get the best of both worlds by staying close to the bottom of the funincular up to Città Alta.
Sights & Landmarks
Piazza Vecchia: The heart of Città Alta, this square is surrounded by historic buildings such as the Palazzo della Ragione and the Torre del Campanone.
Accademia Carrara: One of Italy's most renowned art galleries, featuring works from the Renaissance period.
Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore: A stunning Romanesque church located in Città Alta, famous for its ornate interior.
San Vigilio Castle: Situated on a hill overlooking the city, this is the perfect spot for panoramic views of Bergamo and the surrounding valleys.
Venetian Walls: A UNESCO World Heritage site, these walls surround Città Alta and offer scenic walking paths.
